Spring Awakening in the Fall!
Edgy and thought-provoking musical to open April 5th at the Little Theater in Macgowan Hall at UCLA.
LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- This Fall, HOOLIGAN Theatre Company is proud to present the award-winning rock musical, Spring Awakening! HOOLIGAN will kick off its fifteenth season in the stringent halls of a late-19th century German school, following several curious and rebellious students as they attempt to navigate adolescence under the oppressive vigilance of their elders. The show will run from December 5th to 8th in The Macgowan Little Theater at UCLA.
Based on the 1891 play by Frank Wedekind, the musical adaptation of Spring Awakening incorporates rock and folk music to convey the tumultuous nature of teenage sexuality. With music by Duncan Sheik and lyrics by Steven Sater, the musical highlights the devastating results of childhood repression through the eyes of the students, including beautiful and naive Wendla, savvy and defiant Melchior, and anxious and timid Moritz. The students in the show face not only an army of stern adults, but also a deeply-rooted ideology that emphasizes censorship and restraint. In their attempts to overcome and circumvent the older generation, the students face the tragic consequences of a culture centered around denial. Spring Awakening is ultimately a rousing call for a new generation of open-mindedness and a celebration of youthfulness.
“Spring Awakening explores complex themes, and we are thrilled to bring these discussions and this show to UCLA!” said HOOLIGAN’s artistic directors, Olivia Crawford and Peyton Lumley. “These topics take courage, not only from our characters, but also our cast, crew and audiences, to take a closer look at and analyze in depth. We are very proud of this production and hope you as audience members are encouraged to think about these ideas with a new perspective and be brave in all that you do."
Spring Awakening will run from December 5th to December 8th in UCLA’s Little Theater. Tickets are available through the UCLA Central Ticket Office at (310)-825-2101 or online at www.ticketmaster.com. General admission is $30, groups of 6 or more are $25, non-UCLA students with ID are $15, UCLA Alumni, Faculty and Staff tickets are $25, and UCLA students enter free. Student tickets will be limited to one free ticket per Bruincard.
